A transmission warning on a McLaren is alarming, and it is often quoted that way. In this shop the same fault has turned out, more than once, to be metal debris collecting in the SAV block rather than anything wrong with the gearbox itself.
The difference between cleaning a block, flushing the transmission and clutch and recalibrating the dual clutch, and replacing a unit, is measured in tens of thousands of dollars. It is worth finding out which one you have before authorising either.
Transmission fluid is due at four years or 40,000 miles on SSG and DCT gearboxes, whichever comes first. That is a calendar item, so a low-mileage car can be two intervals behind while the odometer says the car is barely run in.
Symptoms worth bringing in
- A transmission warning message, cleared or current
- Harsh or hesitant shifts, particularly low-speed downshifts
- Slipping or shuddering as the clutch takes up
- Refusal to select a gear, or a car that will not leave Park
- Any gearbox fault on a 600LT or 570S, where the SAV block is a known cause
